About Word Racer
Word Racer is a free, fast-paced multiplayer word game you can play in your browser. It's a modern remake of a game I loved as a kid.
Where it came from
If you spent time on Yahoo! Games in the late '90s and 2000s, you might remember Word Racer. It was basically multiplayer Boggle with a few twists: a timer, oddly shaped grids, bonus tiles that could double or triple a word, and a room full of strangers all racing to find the same letters. I played it constantly. It was one of the first games that made me love words and made me want to type faster.
When Yahoo! Games shut down, Word Racer disappeared with it, and nothing I found online felt quite the same. So I decided to rebuild it.
What I've tried to keep
I've tried to recreate the gameplay and scoring of the original as faithfully as I can:
- Four two-minute rounds per game, each with its own grid shape.
- Double and triple bonus tiles that multiply an entire word.
- A growing bonus for words of seven letters or more.
- Real-time multiplayer, where you can race friends or strangers.
It's not a copy of the original code. Word Racer was rebuilt from the ground up with modern web technology, so it runs in any current browser without plugins or downloads. This project isn't affiliated with Yahoo.
What's new
Since launching in December 2024 I've kept adding features: sound effects, a redesigned home screen, a global top-5 leaderboard, local high scores, private rooms for playing with just your friends, and a way to review every word found (and missed) after each round. You can see the full history in the latest updates.
Some of the things I'm working on next:
- A mobile version designed for touch screens.
- Rejoining a group game if you get disconnected.
- A competitive mode where each word can only be claimed once per game.
Who makes it
Word Racer is built and run by Jessica Chan Studios LLC, a small independent studio. Word Racer® is a registered trademark of Jessica Chan Studios LLC. The game is free to play and is supported by advertising and by donations from players.
I read every piece of feedback. If you have an idea, find a bug, or just want to share a great round, please get in touch.
